Greenwich Millennium Village, London
Greenwich Millennium Village was the first Millennium Community to be identified and is located at the southern end of English Partnerships 121 ha (300 acre) Greenwich Peninsula site.
In 1997, English Partnerships took on the commitment of transforming Greenwich Peninsula previously the site of the largest gas works in Europe into a thriving, 21st century community. Greenwich Peninsula is one of the largest development sites in London and one of Europes biggest regeneration projects.
The Village is being developed by Greenwich Millennium Village Ltd (GMVL), a joint venture between Countryside Properties and Taylor Wimpey. GMVL. The successful negotiation of the Section 106 agreement with London Borough of Greenwich will see a significant number of affordable houses in association with social housing partners Moat Housing.
Quality placemaking
English Partnerships has invested over £200m in acquiring, reclaiming and developing the site. The importance of a natural environment has also been recognised by English Partnerships throughout the development at Greenwich Peninsula. Three main areas of parkland have been created including an ecology park, and extensive works have been carried out to improve the riverside environment.
A state-of-the art integrated school and health centre funded by English Partnerships opened in 2001.
The village square is now also largely complete with only the shop fronts outstanding, creating opportunities for a good selection of retailers to the site.
Eco Homes
Having welcomed the first residents to their new homes in December 2000, Greenwich Millennium Village is currently celebrating the sale of all the homes in the first two phases marking a significant milestone for the project. The final sales completions will take place in November meaning that there are now 1,095 completed homes. The homes completed include a number of live/work units, and a wide range of affordable housing.
Moving forward to next year the existing outline planning permission for the second half of the village, for phases three, four and five, includes 1,843 homes,
Community Involvement
The residents association is now well established and influential; there are resident directors involved in the management company and the thriving community is showing every sign of vibrant and sustainable progress.
