Nene Waterfront, Cambridgeshire

Wisbech in Cambridgeshire was once a thriving port with a strong tradition of boat building and repair. In recent years the growth of coastal container ports has led to a major decline in fortune for the Fenland town with large areas of the waterfront laying derelict for the past 20 years.

Illustration of plans for Nene Waterfront, CambridgeshireEnglish Partnerships, Fenland District Council, the East of England Development Agency, the European Regeneration Development Fund and developer Taylor Woodrow will deliver the £47m Nene Waterfront Regeneration Project and turn the disused 8 ha site into a vibrant residential, retail and business community, with over 300 new homes being created. ‘The Boathouse’, a landmark building designed to act as a focal point of the development, will be a major part of the scheme. The Boathouse will house a yacht club, post office, conference facilities and provide space for 31 office units.

Community involvement is key to the project with a range of initiatives in place to encourage public ownership of the new development. For example local schools have created an open-air gallery producing murals depicting the town and an oral history project has collected residents’ personal histories to create a heritage trail.
