Northmoor, Longsight, South Manchester
A Home Zone area was created in Northmoor along with a programme of modernisation, refurbishment, new build and public realm works - all designed to improve overall living conditions and resulting in the creation of new properties for rent and to buy.
English Partnerships is working with a number of key partners and have made £2.4m of funding available to support the acquisition strategy and the refurbishment and development programme.
Previous socio-economic problems
Northmoor consisted of a large number of small terraced properties which had proved unpopular with homebuyers. Many houses subsequently transferred to the private rental market leading to a transient population, bringing with it a variety of socio-economic problems.
Manchester Methodist Housing Association (MMHA) - now part of the Great Places Group - owned some of the properties in the area and saw an opportunity to intervene.
High quality development
The scheme has been developed to high standards of design, including English Partnerships Quality Standards.
The success of the Northmoor project has been recognised by the Housing Corporation who awarded it their Gold Award for Joined-up Development, and also by the Academy of Sustainable Communities, where it won the Creating the Future award.
Progress on site
Some 50 properties have now been acquired. This will result in 35 new homes (including 19 new build properties) which are much more in line with the need for larger housing required by Northmoors diverse community.
The scheme is on site with the bulk of the refurbishment programme complete. The new build housing completions anticipated in autumn 2008.
