roots
Software for greening brownfield land

English Partnerships and the Forestry Commission have been working together to develop a best practice software programme called "roots", which will help bring derelict and under-used land back into productive use. "Roots" aims to enable successful establishment of woodland and other plant life on previously-used land.
Some benefits include:
- identifying appropriate resources to ensure the long-term viability of planting and habitation creation based on site attributes and soil properties;
- providing an accountable and robust platform on which sensible and effective decisions can be made;
- the capacity to provide a full specification for the restoration and maintenance of brownfield sites as well as being an excellent source of reference;
- a template for site investigation leading to the generation of a site constraints report; and
- range of problem-solving tools called "ready reckoners", plus a toolkit for woodland and grassland species selection.
It is hoped that land owners and contractors will adopt this programme as an industry standard which will ensure a consistent approach, high standards and more sustainable solutions.
