Supporting high quality sustainable growth in England

Register of Surplus Public Sector Land

The Register

English Partnerships has created and maintains The Register of Surplus Public Sector Land on behalf of Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and in collaboration with other government departments, their sponsored bodies and other public sector organisations.

The Register provides a single reference point for all participating public sector organisations on the available national supply of surplus land and helps to ensure that wider government objectives, including housing needs and regional economic and housing strategies, are factored into land disposal decisions.

The Housing Green Paper, Homes for the future: more affordable, more sustainable emphasised the need to recycle homes and land.  English Partnerships is working closely with public sector organisations to ensure more efficient use of surplus public sector land to meet the Government’s housing delivery targets.

A wide cross-section of public sector organisations have supplied information to the Register including Defence Estates, British Railways Board (Residuary) Ltd, NHS Estates, The Highways Agency and The Coal Authority.  Once the disposing agency has provided English Partnerships with details of the site for inclusion on the Register, there is a 40 working day window for public sector agencies and departments to identify new uses for this land.  If the sites can be used beneficially elsewhere in the public sector they may be transferred at market value and then be brought back into beneficial use.

Use of the Register

The number of sites on the Register can vary at any one time but it covers approximately 750 sites and c 5,000 ha.

The Register data is currently only available to central government departments, their sponsored bodies and associated public-sector agencies such as NHS Trusts and local authorities.  For further information, please contact us using the online contact form.

If you are a public body and would like access to the Register or need assistance adding a site, please contact theregister@englishpartnerships.co.uk.

Local authorities can access and are encouraged to use the Register to assist, for example, in developing Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment.  If you are a Local Authority and would like access to the Register please contact us at theregister@englishpartnerships.co.uk
