Silverdale, Newcastle-under-Lyme
The Silverdale Colliery regeneration project in Newcastle will create a truly sustainable community. We are transforming this former coalfield community and bringing the land into active use for the benefit of local people in Silverdale.
The site
This former 111 ha coalfield site closed in 1998. This led to the loss of more than 1,000 jobs, which badly affected the existing local economy.
Funding
English Partnerships is funding this £13.6m project through National Coalfields Programme.
Development
The site is being redeveloped and restored by English Partnerships. We will bring further benefits and add to the already completed Staffordshire County Council-owned Silverdale Enterprise Park.
Plans include:
- new and improved cycle pedestrian and bridleway links
- leisure facilities
- public open space
- childrens play areas.
Three hundred new mixed-tenure homes, including 75 affordable dwellings, will also be created. This will improve housing choice and quality, affordability and opportunity for the existing residents whilst attracting new residents and investment into the area.
Key dates
