Stevenage Town Centre Regeneration

Stevenage town centre was a model of best practice when it was built and was the first to be pedestrianised in Britain. The town continues to attract quality new investment in retail and leisure - such as the West Gate Centre, the Forum and the Plaza - but there is still greater potential for the town. English Partnerships and Stevenage Borough Council realised the opportunities that a rejuvenated town centre could offer and forged a partnership with various other key stakeholders to bring about major redevelopment, aimed at underpinning Stevenage's role as a sub-regional centre.

A Regeneration Strategy was prepared by masterplanners, EDAW Ltd, which provides a co-ordinated, integrated framework for the transformation of the town centre, including:

  • better quality shops (including a major department store);
  • improved public transport with a combined bus and rail interchange;
  • high-density town centre living;
  • substantially improved civic facilities;
  • enhanced office space; and
  • an improved public realm.

English Partnerships and Stevenage Borough Council are working closely with the preferred developer ING / Stanhope, to work up a detailed scheme design that will deliver the aspirations of the Regeneration Strategy, including significant new retail provision, community facilities, high quality housing and improved public transport interchanges.
