Washington was designated a New Town on 26 July 1964 and has an area of 2,271 ha (5,610 acres).

Travel and transport. Washington is located six miles from Newcastle and has good links to the motorway network. It is close to the east coast ports, Newcastle International Airport and it has good rail links.

Employment. It is the European base for a number of overseas companies. Key industries include automotive, pharmaceutical, electronics, engineering, plastics and data processing.
