Whittingham, Preston

The former Whittingham hospital closed in the early 90s and the proposed redevelopment will include homes, sports facilities and a new primary school.
The site
The site is situated to the north east of Preston on the edge of Goosnargh Village. It extends to almost 60 ha (147 acres) and is one of the largest in English Partnerships Hospital Sites Programme.
There are three groups of redundant buildings on the site; St Margarets, the majority of which has already been demolished, Cameron House and St Lukes, which are in a severe state of dereliction.
In 2003 the Department of Health secured planning permission for a mixed-use scheme.
The plan
Taylor Wimpey was appointed as developer in 2007 to transform the derelict site, and following community consultation, to prepare a new masterplan and secure a new planning permission.
Planning permission is currently being sought for a mix of affordable, refurbished and new housing. The proposals include:
- centrally located and accessible sports and leisure facilities
- a multi-sports area for young people
- a site for a new primary school.
As a condition of the existing planning permission, the full development of the site cannot take place until the construction of a bypass is commenced from Junction 1 of the M55 to the north of Broughton Village.
Key milestones
- Secure planning permission
- Confirm the Compulsory Purchase (CPO) for bypass
- Start remediation
